Stylish melodies that combined elements of disco, funk, soul and other genres, young dancing vocalists in bright costumes attracted an army of fans. And, of course, the main role in the project was played by young Michael Jackson, the future pop king. The father of the Jackson family, Joseph, played in the band The Falcons in his youth, but he did not manage to gain much fame. Later, already being a family man, the man did not give up interest in music, engaged in singing with his sons. My father had a guitar, and when he went to work, the brothers secretly took the instrument from the closet and learned to pick up popular melodies on it at that time. When the deception was revealed, Joseph was very unhappy. However, after hearing the boys perform the songs, he changed his mind. The teenagers' singing was so professional that in 1964 a musical team appeared. The "family" band, which was named The Jackson Brothers, included three older brothers, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie Jackson. In addition, the band had two guest amateur musicians, guitarist Reynold Jones and Milford Hite. A year later, it was decided to add Marlon and Michael's younger children to the project. Joseph led the rehearsal process, working out not only the sound, but also the dance part, as well as thinking over the details of the stage images. He also became the project manager. Later, in 1966, when the family quintet gained popularity, the group's mentor Shirley Cartman suggested renaming it The Jackson 5.

There was enough real material, so I didn't have to invent almost anything. Billy Joel: "John was the owner of the bar, and Paul was his real estate agent who wanted to write a great American novel, and Davey was a guy who served in the Navy… Even the girl in the song was my first wife. She also worked there as a waitress."
