Stargift The book "Expedition Br. Kuznetsovs to the Polar Urals", St. Petersburg, 1911 The book "Expedition Br. Kuznetsovs to the Polar Urals", St. Petersburg, 1911 Notes of the Imperial Academy of Sciences on the Physics and Mathematics Department. Volume XXVIII. No. 1. Scientific results of the Kuznetsov brothers expedition to the Polar Urals in 1909, under the command of O.O. Backlund. On September 22, 1909, the head of the expedition, Oleg Backlund, sent a telegram from the village of Samarovsky, present-day Khanty-Mansiysk, addressed to Academician Chernyshev: "The Kara expedition, having successfully completed the route, completed the work on September 16" (Minutes of the meetings of the FMO, 1909). On this day, the members of the expedition of the Kuznetsov brothers (the second name of the "Kara expedition") boarded a steamer going up the Ob River, and on October 2 returned to Tyumen without any special incidents. The four and a half months that passed between May 10 and October 2 were filled with intensive research work and constant movement from place to place - on steamboats, boats, deer, sleds. Many hundreds of miles have been covered. Even the most concise and dry retelling of the route completed during these summer months speaks eloquently about the scale of the research carried out. The text of the book is accompanied by a large number of drawings, tables and maps. The North Ural expedition of the Academy of Sciences and the Russian Geographical Society in 1909 made a valuable contribution to the study of the polar tip of the Ural Mountains. The name Polar Urals has finally been fixed in science. They began to call the northernmost part of the Ural Mountains - north of 66 ° C.

Antique leather-bound book "Kuntsovo and the ancient Setun camp" Zabelin I. 1873. Antique leather-bound book "Kuntsovo and the ancient Setun camp" Zabelin I. 1873. Ivan Egorovich Zabelin (1820-1908) was an outstanding historian and archaeologist. I.E.Zabelin's research concerns mainly the ancient Kievan epoch and the Moscow period of Russian history. The work on Kuntsov and Setunsky camp opens with an essay on the history of the feeling of nature in Russian society, the tradition of country recreation and the "village" life of Muscovites of old times. For a traveler approaching the capital through Kuntsovo, there was a magnificent view of the city from the high bank of the river. N.M.Karamzin considered this part of the Moscow environs one of the most beautiful. The book tells about the history of Kuntsov in different periods of his existence. Thus, the events in the history of the estate during the period of ownership of these lands by representatives of the Naryshkin family are highlighted. The stay of N.M.Karamzin and some other notable personalities in these places is described. I. Zabelin traces all the transitions of Kuntsov into the ownership of certain owners, land redistribution, construction and settlement of this patrimony for several centuries, writing all these facts into the general outline of the history of Moscow and Russia as a whole. Based on information from sources, Zabelin provides many interesting details from the history of the described area of Moscow. For example, it tells about the events of the Troubles and the War of 1812 in connection with the story of Poklonnaya Gora. I. Zabelin wrote this work based on documents from the Moscow Archive of the Ministry of Justice. In particular, he used the materials of scribal and boundary books of the XVII-XVIII centuries, publishing in this edition the boundary inventory of Kuntsovskaya dacha from 1649.

Milovanov N.P., Russia, the end of the XIX century. This catalog with colorful embossed on the front cover in a solid-fabric binding with patterned flyleafs is an incredible rarity. It is almost impossible to meet such specimens, especially with minimal losses and in good condition. Similar demonstration catalogs with fabric samples were produced by each textile factory and, as a rule, were made available to the buyer at the office of a trading house or factory. When choosing the material, the clerks, sellers and buyers tore off the flap of interest from the catalog. The fabrics were not described individually, therefore, some catalogs consisting of many samples are stored in archives, but over time, the fabrics in the catalogs were damaged, lost their former properties, and even in archives such catalogs are usually stored with significant losses. The presented catalog with more than 300 samples from various types of fabrics was released by the boom-weaving and dyeing-dressing factory of the Trading House "N. P. Milovanov", located in the village of Avsyunino Dorokhovskaya parish, Bogorodsky district, Moscow province. The history of this small factory is almost unknown and there is hardly a second such copy in archives or in private collections demonstrating the history of fabric creation.

In this album, Polenov selected works from the legendary gospel cycle, on which he worked from 1899 to 1909, creating more than 72 canvases. The artist called the series "From the life of Christ" the main work of his life. The main unifying core of the series of paintings "From the Life of Christ" was determined by Polenov himself: "For a long time I have been interested in everything that relates to the personality of the Jewish rabbi (teacher) Jesus. Yeshua in Aramaic. Everything that history, legends, poetry have given us about him has always been extremely dear to me." The artist cherished a grandiose idea - to continue the work of Ivanov A. A. and "... to create a Christ not only coming, but already coming into the world and making his way among the people," so the cycle was conceived, and later realized. Vasily Polenov, in order to truthfully recreate the historical situation in which events related to the life and deeds of Jesus Christ took place, in 1881-1882 he undertook a trip to Egypt, Syria, Palestine, and stopped on his way to Greece. He created many sketches, studied the nature of the area and ethnographic types, architectural structures in their relation to the surrounding nature, and in 1899 made a second trip to the East. Currently, the series is scattered across various museums and private collections, the fate of some paintings is unknown, but on the pages of the presented album you can trace the history of the creation of the legendary cycle in the art world.

Stargift The book "Products of uranium disintegration" with an autograph by P.A.Rebinder, St. Petersburg, 1913 The book "Products of uranium disintegration" with an autograph by P.A.Rebinder, St. Petersburg, 1913 An autographed book Georgy Antonov. Products of uranium disintegration. St. Petersburg, 1913. An exceptionally rare edition of the master's thesis of one of the first Russian scientists in the field of radioactive elements with the autograph of physicochemist academician Peter Alexandrovich Rebinder. Rebinder was one of the founders of modern colloidal chemistry. The ways of its development were largely determined by his ideas and discoveries. Many of his ideas have stood the test of time and are successfully developing in many scientific centers around the world. The scientific achievements of the scientist were adequately appreciated by his contemporaries and enjoyed well-deserved authority among the foreign scientific community. Pyotr Alexandrovich opened a new scientific direction - physico-chemical mechanics. In 1928, there was a real discovery called the Ribinder effect. Since then, deformation and destruction of solids have been considered not as mechanical, but as physico-chemical processes. In 1935, the scientist created the largest scientific center - the Department of Dispersed Systems at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Rebinder's approach to science has made it possible to radically change and improve many different technologies. The fact that colloidal chemistry occupies an important place in the curricula of many technological, agricultural, medical universities and academies is a direct merit of Rebinder. The book "Products of uranium disintegration" was written by Georgy Nikolaevich Antonov. In 1908-1911, he was listed as an employee of Ernest Rutherford's laboratory in Manchester, where he emigrated after the revolution, fearing persecution. He studied surface tension and formulated a rule according to which the surface tension of liquids changes at the interface of two phases (Antonov's Rule, 1906). In the 1910s, he continued his studies at Cambridge under Professor D. Nicholson. He was a professor of chemistry at the Mining Institute in Yekaterinburg in 1916, and since 1918 worked in private laboratories in London. Antonov is one of the pioneers of the study of radioactivity in Russia, which he began working for Rutherford and continued upon his return to his homeland. He was engaged in the chemical identification of uranium decay products. In 1920, he received a doctorate in natural Sciences from the University of Manchester, and later worked in France and the USA.

Stargift A book with a handwritten drawing and autograph by the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky A book with a handwritten drawing and autograph by the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky A book with a handwritten drawing and an autograph Fyodor Dostoevsky is a Russian writer, thinker, philosopher and publicist. The classic of world literature, according to UNESCO, is one of the most widely read writers in the world. Dostoevsky's collected works consist of 12 novels, four short stories, 16 short stories and many other works. The Stargift collection contains a fragment of the lifetime edition of Fyodor Dostoevsky's book "Notes from the Dead House", pages: 31-244. The handwritten drawing of the writer, presented on the last page of the fragment, is dated by the author himself — 1874. In the center of the drawing is the personal signature of Fyodor Dostoevsky. According to the expert, the drawing depicts a self—portrait of the writer, as well as portraits of Leo Tolstoy, literary critic Nikolai Strakhov and Dostoevsky's wife Anna Grigoryevna. The identity of the latter is helped to establish, among other things, the initials left by the author on the profile of the depicted woman: "A. G.". It is known that it was Anna Grigoryevna who saved the "notebooks" of the writer, containing most of his drawings, as the greatest jewel. So, thanks to her thrift, Dostoevsky's graphic sketches are now known, made by him in the process of thinking over the plots of "Crime and Punishment", "Idiot", "Demons", "Teenager", "Brothers Karamazov". Of the total number of famous drawings by Dostoevsky, human portraits make up only about 7%. In addition to its uniqueness, the drawing is also interesting in the history of the relationships of the people depicted on it. Two great writers of their era, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, being contemporaries, never met in person. After Fyodor Mikhailovich's death, Tolstoy wrote in a letter to Strakhov: "I wish I could say everything I feel about Dostoevsky. I had never seen this man and had never had a direct relationship with him; and suddenly, when he died, I realized that he was the closest, dearest, most necessary person to me." Nikolai Strakhov is a Russian philosopher, publicist, literary critic, and corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Strakhov was one of the first to appreciate the enormous literary significance of Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace", and became the first biographer of Dostoevsky. Since the beginning of 1861, Strakhov was an active employee of the literary and political magazines "Time" and "Epoch" of the Dostoevsky brothers. Dostoevsky's works such as "Humiliated and Insulted", "Notes from the Dead House", "A Nasty Joke", "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions" and "Notes from the Underground" appeared on the pages of these magazines.

Stargift The book "Phaedrus, freedman of Augustus, Aesop's fables", Paris, Coustelier Printing House, 1742 The book "Phaedrus, freedman of Augustus, Aesop's fables", Paris, Coustelier Printing House, 1742 The book was printed in the Paris printing house of Antoine-Urbain Coustelier II, who between 1742 and 1746 published a series of small-format Latin classics, which included this edition of the fables of Phaedrus. The frontispiece depicting a mythological plot is illustrated by the engraver Antoine Quapel. The book contains five plot screensavers, engraved by E. Fessar, depicting the same scene of the fabulist Phaedrus surrounded by animals — frequent heroes of his works. There are also ornamental screensavers and small initials at the beginning of each chapter. The preservation is perfect: the original cover has been restored, the sheets are not damaged, there are minor changes in the color of the paper. The text is in Latin. Phaedrus is a Roman poet and fabulist of the beginning of our era. Often his fables are translations of Aesop's fables, but also his own fables "in the Aesopian spirit." Phaedrus wrote five books of poetic fables, 134 of them have survived to our time. The fables are written in Latin iambic hexameter, as are the comedies of Plautus and Terence. The fabulist Phaedrus was a native of Macedonia. At first he was a slave, then a freedman of the Emperor Augustus, which is where part of the title of the book comes from. He wrote poetry in Latin and, as he admitted, wanted them to compete with Greek fables, in particular, with Aesop himself. The heroes of Phaedrus' fables are people and talking animals. Historical and legendary figures often became the exponents of his thoughts. For example, Socrates in the fable builds a small house, the size of which is enough to gather real friends there. In other fables, the heroes were the Emperor Tiberius and the commander Pompey. Repeatedly, Aesop himself became the hero of the fables. Fables were considered a despicable low genre in the literary circles of imperial Rome, so the poetic work of Phaedrus was not appreciated during his lifetime. In late antiquity, his fables, set out in prose, became part of the fable collection (the so-called "Romulus"), which for many centuries served for school education and was one of the most important sources for medieval fable. In the Middle Ages, the fables of Phaedrus were considered lost, but at the end of the XVI century, the legacy of the fabulist was published and its authenticity was verified.

Stargift The book "Man and woman" in 3 volumes. St. Petersburg, "Enlightenment", 1911 The book "Man and woman" in 3 volumes. St. Petersburg, "Enlightenment", 1911 The Stargift collection presents the famous German encyclopedia "Man and Woman" in 3 volumes. The books deal with the history of the relationship between the sexes. Among the authors: biologists, doctors, historians, cultural scientists, philosophers. The publication covers almost all aspects of history, sociology, psychology, and biology of the sexes. "Man and Woman" is a collective work, the creation of which was attended by: Prof. T. Akhelis, V. Belshe, I. Bloch, etc. The three-volume collection is a luxurious edition, beautifully illustrated, including many images on separate sheets protected by parchment. Each volume of the publication has its own theme. The first considers a man and a woman "physiologically", as indicated by the names of the sections: "A man in married life", "A man in the position of a father", "A man in the position of a bachelor", "A man in old age", "A woman-mother", etc. The second volume explores the institution of marriage and its attendant phenomena. The oldest of the unions connecting a man and a woman is studied from a variety of angles, such as "Cultural history of marriage", "Hygiene of marriage", "Children and marriage", "Earning activity and marriage". The third one combines the "social" chapters, which describe the conditions of existence of representatives of both sexes in various strata of society (from the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie to the working-peasant environment). It also treats "socially significant" topics: "Man and woman at home", "Man and woman in working life", "Gender relations among different nations".

Veltman, Moscow, S. Selivanovsky Printing House, 1837. The copy presented in the Stargift collection comes from the collection of Colonel Sergei Nikolaevich Creighton of the Life Guards of the Preobrazhensky Regiment, whose library contained over 2,000 volumes mainly on Russian literature from 1760-1850. Alexander Fomich Veltman is a Russian writer and archaeologist. The writer's talent was recognized by such well-known literary critics of his time as V.G. Belinsky, who devoted several of his articles to the author's work. In his novel "Virginia, or A Trip to Russia" (1837), Veltman addresses the themes of modern reality and increasingly tends to a realistic form of narration. In a comic form, the book describes the ideas and prejudices of foreigners about Russia. "Russians bet money, estates and even wives, as the French living here told me. And this loss is sacred to them; poor women consider it the will of providence and do not even complain about it; the husband comes to his wife and says to her: you know, my friend, I lost you! — Well, my friend, maybe, God willing, you will win back again! — the wife answers, saying goodbye to her husband and goes to the house of her new ruler."

Stargift The book "Collection of information on Russia, 1890". St. Petersburg, Central Statistical Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1890. The book "Collection of information on Russia, 1890". St. Petersburg, Central Statistical Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1890. The Stargift collection contains an antique edition of the statistical collection of information on Russia of the Central Statistical Committee of the Interior of the Russian Empire for 1890, duplicated in two languages — Russian and French. The collection provides summary tables with various statistical data: on fires over 28 years, on urban productivity, on gold mining, on the production of pig iron and iron by districts, on tax collections by provinces, on the performance of military service and others. The organizational and structural design of statistical activities in Russia began on September 8, 1802. On the basis of the Supreme Manifesto, at the end of the year, each Minister was obliged to submit to His Imperial Majesty, through the Government Senate, a written report on the management of all the units entrusted to him. On March 20, 1811, the official center for government Statistics of Russia was established — the Statistical Part of the Russian Empire. Later, a special Statistical office is established in the Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. His task was to compile detailed and as accurate as possible descriptions of the condition of all units subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In addition, he was charged with preliminary consideration of city plans, projects for new divisions of provinces and counties, and assumptions about city revenues and expenditures. The basis of statistical work was the information received from the departments of the Ministry and from the heads of provinces. The rules stipulated that in the production of statistical work, officials should always begin with a historical review of the previous state of the part described by them, in order to compare it with the present. Tables were attached to the text of the descriptions. In 1852, a Statistical Committee was established under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and on March 4, 1858, it received the name of the Central Statistical Committee. This transformation testified to the official recognition of the need to combine all statistical work carried out in the country.
