Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people in the world to make a confirmed successful ascent to the highest point on Earth - the summit of Jomolungma (Everest).
The climbers conquered the peak on May 29, 1953 and planted the flags of Great Britain, Nepal, India and the United Nations there. The news of this spread around the world only on June 2, just during the coronation of the British Queen Elizabeth II.
The Queen awarded Hillary a knighthood and the right to add the title "sir" to her name. Tenzing Norgay, who was not a citizen of the British Commonwealth, received the royal Medal.
