Mark was born in 1950 in Modesto, California. As a child, he loved to swim on American beaches, and his parents sent him to one of the strongest swimming clubs in the USA — Santa Clara. Spitz's first successes came when he turned 15. He won 4 gold medals at the Maccabi Games in Israel. Two years later, at the Pan American Games, he won 5 times in the heats at distances from 100 to 1500 m. And that was just the beginning. At the age of 18, Mark competed in the Olympic Games in Mexico City. Already here he expected to surpass the result of his idol Johnny Weissmuller, who won 5 gold medals at one Games. However, a change of coach and a severe cold prevented it. Mark won "only" two gold medals in the 4x100 and 4x200 m relay, silver in the 100 m butterfly and bronze in the 100-meter freestyle.
The real fame came to Spitz at the 1972 Munich Games. Mark has conquered all 7 Olympic distances! Spitz's popularity did not decrease after the 1972 Olympic Games, he returned home not only with gold medals, but also with successful advertising contracts. According to the contract presented as an exhibit with the William Morris agency, Mark Spitz promoted a wide range of products - from swimwear and pool accessories to milk, razors and even hair dryers. In addition to maintaining a media image, Spitz has also appeared on television numerous times with stars such as Cher and Bob Hope.
