Valery Brumel is a Soviet high jumper, Olympic champion in 1964, European champion in 1962, former world record holder, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.
After a terrible accident in 1965, he became interested in writing. In 1969, Valery Brumel co-authored the novel "There is a height above the bar", and in 1971 the book "Height" was published.
Brumel's novel "Don't change yourself" (co-authored with Lapshin A.) was published in 1979 in the magazine "Young Guard". This novel was then published as a separate book, later translated into seven languages. Two destinies served as the material for the artwork - Valery Brumel himself and the outstanding Soviet surgeon Gavriil Ilizarov, who put the athlete on his feet.
