About this product
Art. : 015-1055
A complete collection of antiquities from the study of Sir William Hamilton, an antiquarian, archaeologist, volcanologist and envoy of the British Embassy in Naples, Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803) was a leading European figure of his time. Although the romance between his wife Lady Emma Hamilton and Horatio Nelson tends to overshadow Sir William's own work, his work as a scholar and classicist made significant contributions to the study of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius.
An expert in ancient art, Hamilton also amassed an invaluable collection of ancient Greek vases, which was subsequently sold to the British Museum in London in 1772. Before the items were shipped to England, Hamilton commissioned Pierre-Francois Hugues to'Ankarville, an adventurer and art dealer, to document the vases with words and images. The final catalog, published in four volumes and known as Les Antiquites d'ANCARVILLE, is a masterpiece of neoclassicism. Never before have ancient vases been presented with such care and sublime beauty.
With this reissue, Taschen revives d'ancarville's masterful catalog for a modern audience, reproducing in the smallest detail the same untouched images that evoked Europe's love of classical style.
