The most famous historical adventure novel by the famous British writer Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) tells about the struggle of the Aztecs - the indigenous inhabitants of Mexico - with the brutal Spanish conquerors led by Cortez.
The main character, Englishman Thomas Wingfield, going in search of his mother's killer, ends up on another continent and, by the will of fate, becomes the husband of Otomi, the daughter of the Aztec ruler Montezuma. Together with Otomi and her people, he experiences all the dramatic moments of the death of a great civilization.
