The "Monuments of Moscow Antiquity" contains an essay on the monumental history of the city and unique descriptions of the Kremlin, China, the White and Earthen cities of Moscow. Among them are the Dormition, Arkhangelsk and Annunciation Cathedrals, Chudov and Voskresensky Maiden monasteries, Armory, Faceted and Golden Chambers, royal chambers and much more. In his work, the author very accurately noted the connection of historical and architectural monuments with the culture of everyday life, the form of government and the level of education. The publication is illustrated with plans of Moscow, drawings of architectural monuments and drawings by the famous artist, academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts F. Solntseva.
The fundamental work on the monuments of Moscow antiquity was published in the 1840s. under the patronage of the trustee of the Moscow School District S. G. Stroganov, Governor D. V. Golitsyn and St. Filaret, Metropolitan of Moscow. The book was dedicated to Nicholas I, and for it the author received a diamond ring as a reward from the emperor.
Ivan Mikhailovich Snegirev (1793-1868), being a professor at Moscow University at the Department of Roman Literature, was a famous researcher of Moscow monuments.
The full name of the gift edition: Snegirev I. M. Monuments of Moscow antiquity with an addition of an essay on the monumental history of Moscow and ancient views and plans of the ancient capital: With three plans of Moscow, twenty-three paintings based on drawings by Academician Solntsev, printed in paints, and eighteen engraved and lithographed drawings.
Execution: exclusive execution. The first edition. 4 notebooks in one binding – Moscow, Printing House of August Semyon, 1841. Very good, full set of illustrations. Modern solid leather embossed binding. The whole-skinned, hand-bound binding is made according to ancient European technology, with cords. The cover and spine are hand-embossed. The doublet (flyleaf) is made of hand-dyed marble paper, with a hand-rolled border ornament.
