Vladimir Nikolaevich Zhuk (1847-1915) was a well—known doctor and educator in pre-revolutionary Russia. His book "Mother and Child" was the first work devoted to hygiene during pregnancy, childbirth and infant care, based entirely on scientific knowledge.
The material is arranged in sections that logically follow each other: heredity, pregnancy, life of a uterine baby, newborn care, maternity care, clothes for infants, baby supplies, mother and nurse, artificial feeding, the first years of life.
The great importance of the book lies in the fact that complex scientific and medical data on the peculiarities of the development of the body of a uterine and newborn baby, as well as on the functions of the maternal body during gestation and breastfeeding, are presented in a generalized and accessible form for the general reader. The author, with the help of numerous illustrations and comments, shows their practical consequences.
