Bronze medal, 1875, issued in honor of the 80th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Carlyle.
Thomas Carlyle is a British writer, publicist, historian and philosopher of Scottish origin, the author of the multi-volume works "The French Revolution", "Heroes, Hero Worship and the Heroic in History", "The Life Story of Frederick II of Prussia". He is known as one of the brilliant stylists of the Victorian era.
This medal was minted by order of subscribers of the Carlyle Memorial Fund for the Birthday of the British sculptor, miniaturist and medallist - Joseph Edgar Bohm. His other famous works include the sculpture "The Shepherd and the Bull", the equestrian statues of Edward VII in Bombay and Robert Napier in Calcutta, the statue of John Bunyan in Bedford, Field Marshal Burgoyne in Waterloo Square, John Russell (near the Parliament building), Charles Darwin, the monument to Frederick III in Windsor, many sculptural portraits-busts.
George Thomas Morgan also participated in the creation of the medal. He was an engraver of the United States Mint who is known for the design of many popular coins such as the Morgan Dollar, the reverse of the Columbia Exposition half dollar, and the reverse of the McKinley Birthplace Memorial gold dollar.
