The prototype of this model was the fastest and most maneuverable fighter of the Second World War.
Serial production of these aircraft (Yakovlev Design Bureau) began in the summer of 1943, during the Battle of Kursk, and lasted until 1946.
During this time, about 4,848 cars were produced. One of the planes is in the National Aviation Museum in Le Bourget in memory of the legendary Normandy– Neman regiment.
