Amethyst was often used to decorate the clothes of clergy, was used to decorate church utensils, icon frames. Translated from Greek, amethyst means “not leading a wild life.” The ancient Greeks believed that amethyst could protect against intoxication and therefore often drank from cups decorated with amethyst.
