Every poet, as marked by a spark of God, is to a certain extent God's chosen one, and thus his works are also to some extent a "divine verb." This edition contains, as far as possible, everything that was written by our native Russian poets on the themes of the Bible in the 19th century. The book includes works by Alexei Apukhtin (1840-1893), Viktor Burenin (1841-1926), Peter Weinberg (1831-1908), Eduard Huber (1814-1847), Vasily Zhukovsky (1783-1852), Vsevolod Krestovsky (1840-1895), Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841), Apollon Maikov (1821-1897), Dmitry Merezhkovsky (1865-1941), Alexei Merzlyakov (1778-1830), Lev Mey (1822-1862), Semyon Nadson (1862-1887), Alexander Polezhaev (1804-1838), Yakov Polonsky (1819-1898), Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), Athanasius Fet (1820-1892), Konstantin Fofanov (1862-1911), Nikolai Yazykov (1803-1846) and many, many others. A special place in this volume is occupied by the poems of authors little known to the modern reader for the reason that their work was strictly banned during the 70 years of Soviet rule and has not returned to a secular audience until now. These are the works of Semyon Frug (1860-1916), Alexander Krasnitsky-Lavrov (1866-1917), Konstantin Ledov (1862-1937), Olga Chyumina (1858-1909) and others, who worked together on the three-volume "Biblical Motifs" (1896-1898), the publication of the Rodina magazine, which is the basis of our book. It was an incredible success at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries.
