The collection by Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher Masoch includes stories about the life of Jewish communities and towns in Russia and Poland, Italy and Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as other European countries. Each story also tells about some Jewish custom or religious holiday. The illustrations for the stories and fairy tales in the collection were made by French artists of the same name: Emile Levy, Alphonse Levy and Henri Levy, as well as the Polish-French artist and illustrator Edward Louis.
