One of the most famous novels by Alexandre Dumas "The Count of Monte Cristo" is given in the translation by V. M. Stroev. The publication is decorated with illustrations by several artists at once: the wonderful draughtsman Pierre-Gustave Staal, the batalist Jean-Adolphe Bose, the talented painter Angers-Louis Janet, the graphic artist and cartoonist Paul Gavarni and the engraver Tony Joanno. All of them were the same age as most of the characters in the novel, so the realities of that time depicted in their works acquire extraordinary historical authenticity.
