The basis of this research was the master's thesis of the Russian lawyer Nikolai Pavlovich Lyapidevsky (1842-1885). N. P. Lyapidevsky was one of the first in Russia to study the history of the notary from its inception to the XIX century. The first part of the first volume — "The Notary before his elevation to public office" consists of two departments: "The Notary in Rome" (clerks and private scribes, tabellions and tabellion documents, church notary) and "The Notary among the barbarian peoples". The second part — "Notary public as a public office" also consists of two departments. The department "The process of elevating a notary to public office" tells about the imperial and royal notaries, the organization of the notary by the laws of Charles and Lothair I, the history of the notary in Germany and France before the XIV century. The second section — "Notary in Italy before its acceptance in Germany and France" — tells about notary corporations, the specifics of the activities of notaries, notarial documents and their protection. The second volume, which was supposed to bring the history of the notary to the XIX century, was not published. Nevertheless, N. P. Lyapidevsky's book still occupies a prominent place in the legal literature.
