The monograph examines the general issues of the ethnogenesis of the Jewish people and their history in antiquity and the Middle Ages, the peculiarities of anthropological appearance and languages, as well as the problems of studying Jewish folklore and ethnography in different countries. The main attention is paid to the ethnopolitical history and the uniqueness of the traditional culture of Russian Jews - their occupations, costume, rituals of the life cycle, rituals of religious holidays, food, folk knowledge, folklore, decorative and applied arts, education and much more. Special sections highlight the diverse processes taking place among Jews in the modern world, and the relationship of Jews with their surrounding peoples. Separate sections contain historical and ethnographic materials on non-Ashkenazi groups - Georgian and Bukharian Jews and Judaizers.

Historians, philologists, ethnographers, anthropologists, sociologists, and folklorists from Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and France participated in the creation of the volume.

Beautifully designed gift edition in a leather binding with a three-sided dyed edge and silk lace. The design uses a combination of pancake and gold embossing with a leather insert of a different color and texture. The flyleafs are decorated with dubbing.
