About this product
Art. : 048-213
Adam Olearius's account of travels as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Embassy to Muscovy and Persia is considered the best foreign book about Russia in the XVII century. Its main advantages are the German pedantry of the author and the rich illustrative material with which Olearius took the trouble to provide his work, hiring the most skilled engravers for this purpose. As a result, his book reads like a slow and thorough Russian novel with sketches about life in an era when neither the genre of novels nor photography existed in the world yet. And historians appreciate it for the uniqueness and reliability of information about all aspects of Russian life at that time (minus those few chapters where Olearius resorts to retelling from hearsay about the affairs of bygone days). Olearius was an encyclopedic scientist, as well as a polyglot, cartographer, ethnographer and a gifted draughtsman endowed with extraordinary powers of observation. It was according to his project that a unique globe with a planetarium inside was made, later presented to Peter I for the Kunstkammer in the new Russian capital.
