Thor Heyerdahl is a Norwegian archaeologist, traveler and writer.
The purpose of the experiment by Thor Heyerdahl "Ra" was to demonstrate that ancient navigators, in particular, the Egyptians, could make transatlantic crossings on sailing ships using the Canary Current.
The results of the expedition allowed not only to look at world history in a different way, but also played a major role in the adoption of the Declaration on the Environment in 1972.
The fact is that the Ra-2 crew provided materials on ocean pollution at the end of the expedition. During the voyage, the team encountered a huge amount of bitumen and fuel oil. According to their memories, the pieces were the size of a fist. As a result, in 1972, the Stockholm United Nations Conference adopted a plan of measures that played a key role in the development of the environmental policy of states and the intensification of international cooperation in this area.
Currently, the exhibit is taking part in the exhibition "Saving the Arctic: Stories of Great Voyages" aboard the world's largest nuclear icebreaker "50 Years of Victory" as part of an expedition to the North Pole.
