Birch icon "Nikolai Mozhaisky" in KyotoBirch icon "Nikolai Mozhaisky" in KyotoThe ancient miraculous carved image of St. Nicholas with a temple in his left hand and a sword in his right was named after the place of his glorification in the city of Mozhaisk, where the sculpture was placed in a special kiosk in St. Nicholas Cathedral. The monument is the first in a series of images of the saint in this iconographic type. The origin of the iconography of "Nikola Mozhaisky" is usually explained by an oral local legend, recorded at the end of the XIX century, about the appearance of St. Nicholas over the besieged city of Mozhaisk with a sword in his hand. However, other, more ancient texts related to the formation of iconography are also known. First of all, it is "The Story ... about the coming of the wonderworker Nicholas to Caesarea Philippova ...", included in his "Life ...", written by Simeon Metaphrastus (X century). The story was also part of the so-called "Other Life", translated into Slavic in the XI century. The Bulgarian edition of the Syrian life "Nikola the Wanderer" was widely distributed in Russia.

Kiosk "George the Victorious" Karelian birchKiosk "George the Victorious" Karelian birchAccording to an ancient legend, George killed a snake (dragon) that devastated the land of a pagan king, and saved the princess, who was bred to be eaten by a snake, from death. This legend was often interpreted allegorically: the princess is the church, the serpent is paganism.
In the West, St. George is the patron saint of chivalry and crusaders.
Images of St. George have been found since ancient times on grand ducal coins and seals. Since the time of Dmitry Donskoy, he has been considered the patron saint of Moscow. The image of a horseman striking a dragon with a spear, which appeared in Moscow heraldry from the turn of the XIV—XV centuries, was officially fixed in 1730. Currently, the figure of St. George striking a snake occupies a central place in the coats of arms of Moscow and the Russian Federation.

A kiosk for a lectern iconA kiosk for a lectern iconThe main purpose of the kiosk is the ability to hang an icon. The fact is that the board on which the icon is painted is called the "body of the icon" and, according to the canons, cannot be subjected to mechanical influences. That is, neither attach a suspension to the reverse side, nor even make holes for a nail or screw in the body of the icon. The icon itself can only be placed. In order to be able to hang an icon, you need a kiosk.
This kiosk is designed for lectern icons, measuring 21*29 cm. The external dimensions of the kiosk are 37*29 cm, which is quite comparable to the size of a large icon. This is clearly visible in the photos. Inside the kiosk there is a soft couch draped with velvet, carefully supporting and fixing the icon. The relief ornament of the frame organically complements the pattern of the icon's margins.
