The Great Russian of the Ryazan province is a unique sculpture among the "Nationalities of Russia". It should be emphasized that the correct name of the sculpture "Sower" - sculptor Pavel Kamensky purposefully highlighted his profession, not his nationality. After all, his task was to show not only the appearance, costumes and special facial features of the nationalities, but also their character, mentality and lifestyle. The choice of the name focuses on the importance of agriculture for residents of the South Russian provinces: Ryazan, Tula or Tambov – it is for these territories that a festive costume of this kind is characteristic.
The man is wearing a belted shirt made of striped fabric and trousers with blue and white stripes made of plain linen. Hanging from the character's shoulder is his main attribute, a large basket of seeds. Traditionally, it was believed that sowing was an exclusively male occupation, by nature accessible only to adult and mature men, the heads of the family. With a broad and confident gesture, the peasant sprinkles the fertile land.
"The Great Russian of the Ryazan Province" is one of the most striking images from the "Nationalities of Russia" series.
