In the autumn of 1598, the youngest son of the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Augustus, continued his two-year journey through Italy. He kept a diary, and among the many impressions of the beautiful cities of Italy, Venice occupies a special place, which he visited three times. It was here that the distinguished traveler bought the "Book on the Ingenuity and Art of playing Chess" — an Italian translation of the famous work of the Spaniard Ruy Lopez.
After carefully examining his purchase, August decided to create a book about chess for his compatriots. The dream came true: in 1616, the book "Chess, or the Royal Game" was published in Leipzig.
The author of the book hid behind the pseudonym Gustavus Selenus, but died exactly half a century after the publication of the book that glorified his name...
But what does "moonlight" chess have to do with all this, you ask? The most direct. In the book "Chess, or the Royal Game" there was an engraving on copper depicting the players at the board. They played with figures of a very unusual shape, which later became known as "in the style of Selenus".
This form of figures appeared in Germany earlier, but it was thanks to the book of Selenus that it began to spread rapidly, including in other countries — Austria, Denmark, Italy... This is due not only to the perfection of the shapes of the figures, but also to the fact that the duke sent copies of his book to all the highest aristocracy of the German principalities, even to the Kaiser himself!
