The genre of fable existed among all peoples, being from ancient times the primary and surest way of education and upbringing. In them, a comic story was presented orally or in writing in a fascinating way, ending with a lecture. Using examples to the contrary, the fables warned people against stupidity, serving as a kind of corpus of folk wisdom. Two centuries ago, the fables of Krylov's "grandfather" became such a treasure trove for us. Who hasn't heard of the Dragonfly that sang "the whole summer", the fearless Pug, the "trishkin kaftan" or the "demyanova ear"? A book of these fables stands or should stand on a bookshelf in every home and family, and some of them are memorized already in childhood. Like Aesop and Lafontaine, there are only a couple of hundred fables, and half of them are completely original. According to Pushkin, they have the characteristic "cheerful cunning of the mind, mockery and a picturesque way of expressing themselves" characteristic of Russian people. Whereas the wit and puppeteer who composed them, who appeared to his contemporaries as a silent, lazy and gluttonous man, according to the poet Batyushkov, who knew him: "having forgotten the grief of life, he went straight to heaven for dinner."
