John Stuart Mill can safely be called one of the first feminists who were not afraid to declare the England of the XIX century about the “legal subordination of one sex to another”: in 1869, his book “On the subordination of a Woman” was published. Three people participated in the creation of this work: Mill's wife Harriet Taylor-Mill, her daughter Helen Taylor and John Stewart himself. However, only John Stewart's name is listed on the cover. Perhaps they, along with their wife and stepdaughter, felt that they would listen to the thoughts of a feminist philosopher rather than to the arguments of women.
After almost 150 years, many of the authors' ideas have not lost their relevance, they remain interesting and in demand in the society of the XXI century.
This publication is provided with an introductory article by Olga Kharitonova, PhD, curator of the School of Feminism.
