"Where the spirit of science prevails, great things are done there and by small means," — following this credo, the "wonderful doctor", to whom A. I. Kuprin dedicated his Christmas story, remained in history. Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov was not just a doctor, but a man of the greatest courage and the highest modesty. He went through four wars and won the fight against the administrative system in medicine and education, saved the rebellious Garibaldi from death, predicted a long life for Mendeleev, married Kruzenshtern's granddaughter and anticipated the cosmic worldview of Florensky, Tsiolkovsky and Vernadsky. The indefatigable scientist is known all over the world as the founder of military field surgery, the creator of the first atlas of topographic anatomy and the organizer of the nurse training system. Hundreds of thousands of wounded were saved thanks to Pirogov's perseverance and talent. With his idea that "the true subject of teaching is to prepare a person to be a human being," the humanization of education and upbringing in Russia began. The "Diary of an old doctor", where the great scientist sums up his life and spiritual quest, resembles a conversation with a wise man with a capital letter.
