The book by the talented French historian of the XIX century, Paul Guiro, is a unique collection of strictly thematically selected excerpts from the works of modern historians and ancient writers. Giro tried to highlight almost all aspects of Roman life. He introduced them at the forum and at home, on the battlefields and at friendly parties. The reader will learn how people of that distant era ate, what clothes they wore, how they worked and spent their leisure time. The religious, political and military components of Ancient Rome are outlined concisely, but succinctly enough for the first acquaintance. For his book, Giro selected the most striking excerpts from the works of remarkable historians of antiquity: Titus Livy, Polybius, Cornelius Tacitus, Dion Cassius, Herodian, Ammianus Marcellinus. Here we hear the living voices of politicians and orators - Cato the Elder and both Plinii, Cicero and Julius Caesar, Trajan and Marcus Aurelius, Constantine the Great and Julian the Apostate. The flavor of the era is emphasized by excerpts from ancient literature - the works of Aulus Gellius and Petronius, Ausonius and Plautus, Horace and Virgil.
