Notes on the Gallic War. Gaius Julius Caesar

"Notes on the Gallic War" by Gaius Julius Caesar is perhaps the greatest book about the war in world literature. It was written hot on the heels of events by the main character of that war, and in it Caesar the writer is equal to Caesar the commander and the historical figure. This is a tragic epic of the conquest of a huge country and a head-on clash of civilizations. The book is written extremely simply and intelligently, as if it is about the struggle of the Romans with a terrible epidemic. Therefore, Caesar's "Commentarii de bello Gallico" can be read as an account of the legendary events of two thousand years ago, but it can also be read as a kind of commentary on the later vicissitudes of world history.
