Its author, Leonid Pavlovich Sabaneev, is a famous researcher of nature, a subtle connoisseur of everything related to life, habits and features of fishing, a recognized authority in the art of hunting in the world.

To popularize hunting in Russia, L.P.Sabaneev alone did as much as a hundred institutions could not do. He organized the first hunting clubs in Russia, published beautifully illustrated nature and hunting magazines at his own expense, his efforts created the first nature lovers societies in the country, and his exhibitions gathered thousands of fans. Sabaneev even managed to organize a simultaneous "census" of hunting throughout Russia.

Sabaneyev's writing talent and his love of nature were appreciated by Ch.Darwin and the Prince of Monaco, I.S. Turgenev and members of the Romanov royal family, and among the old-timers of Moscow fishermen, there were enthusiastic legends about his knowledge of the habits of fish and fishing gear.
