The famous work of Professor Konrad Keller consists of four parts. The first part is devoted to the general phenomena of marine animal life and contains information about the glow of the sea, the color of marine animals, coastal fauna, fauna of the sea surface, coral reefs. The second part tells about the vertebrates of the sea, including: marine mammals, seabirds, marine reptiles and marine fish. The third and fourth parts describe invertebrates and marine vegetation.

Peter Schmidt, translator of the presented work, is an outstanding Russian zoologist and ichthyologist, head of the zoological department of the Kamchatka expedition of F.P. Ryabushinsky, who made a huge contribution to the study of the ichthyofauna of the North Pacific Ocean and the Far Eastern seas of Russia.
