The illustrated atlas was published by the German publishing company F. A. Brockhaus in 1849. This copy shows a wonderful example of a unique and ancient atlas of the 19th century.

F. A. Brockhaus is a German publishing company founded by Frederick Arnold Brockhaus, a merchant of manufactured goods, in 1805 in Amsterdam (North Holland). Since Brockhaus himself, being a foreigner, could not be a member of the bookselling corporation, the printer Rolof I. G. assumed the title of publisher, and the original name of the publishing house became Rohloff & Co.

In 1811, due to the unstable situation in the country, Brockhaus moved the publishing house to Germany, to the city of Altenburg, where it began to work under the name "Kunst-und Industrie Comptoir von Amsterdam". The publishing house officially received the name "F. A. Brockhaus" on January 14, 1814, and this name has remained almost unchanged to this day. Publishing activities expanded rapidly and by 1818 the firm had relocated to Leipzig, where Brockhaus founded a large publishing house.

Since 1808, the publishing house has been publishing the encyclopedia "Konversations Lexikon", widely known as "Brockhaus". In addition, the publishing house produced the multi-volume encyclopedias "Meyer" and "Duden", as well as many other equally well-known publications. After Brockhaus' death, his business passed to his sons, then to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who continued his business with honor. At the beginning of the 20th century, the publishing house published books in almost all European languages and had branches in Berlin, Vienna, Paris and London.

Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus is a German publisher, founder of the Brockhaus publishing company and publisher of the Brockhaus Encyclopedia. He was born on May 4, 1772. His encyclopedia served as the basis for the Brockhaus-Efron Russian Dictionary (82 volumes) from 1890 to 1907. At the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX century, the appearance of the term "Atlas" on the pages of the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary was explained by the fact that "on the cover of such a collection, the titan Atlas was usually depicted holding the globe on his shoulders. Subsequently, this name was transferred to collections of images of other genera."
