Natural alexandrite is a unique gemstone, first discovered in the Ural Mountains in Russia in the 1830s. It was named after Alexander II, the then tsar of Russia. This type of chrysoberyl is distinguished by its extraordinary ability to change color — from green to red — depending on the type of lighting.
Alexandrite became quite popular in the Victorian era, when it was used in jewelry and other decorative items. However, due to its rarity, it was quite expensive and accessible only to the wealthy elite.
Today, natural alexandrite is found in a wide variety of colors and sizes and is relatively affordable than before. It is still popular for making jewelry and collectibles, and is also considered one of the precious stones that should be carefully preserved.
