Michael Aram
Michael Aram Volohodjian is an American artist with Armenian roots, a sculptor and creator of virtuoso interior items decorating the best houses in the world.
Michael received his formal education in the United States, having mastered the professions of an artist, sculptor and art historian. However, this turned out to be insufficient for a young talented decorator. He became seriously interested in design. The search for the origins of decorative traditions, the harmony of the talent given to him by nature with the achievements of modern art led him to distant India.
Here he discovered the rich traditions of metalworking and decoration, the ancient school of handicrafts and craftsmen who keep the secrets of their ancestors. Learning the secrets of working with metal, and drawing inspiration from the traditions of Indian decorative art, in which symbolism is closely intertwined with nature, in 1989 he released his first collection.
Today, Michael Aram speaks Hindi, lives alternately in Delhi and New York, his works are sold in more than 600 locations around the world, and the boutique named after him in Manhattan was opened in 2007.
The materials he uses in his works are diverse: steel, bronze, aluminum, brass, alloys with copper or tin, iron, glass, ceramics, porcelain, wood, leather, granite, marble, soy wax... Casting processes, cold and hot forging are used, and as for decoration techniques, then there is a sufficient number of them. This includes polishing, oxidation, nickel or gold plating, and enameling. The output is stunning and elegant products.
Michael Aram creates high-end tableware, cutlery, furniture and striking accessories. Floral elements in the embrace of hand–forged are the features that make the works of this designer recognizable and sought-after gifts on the verge of applied and high art all over the world.
