Ivan Gubkin is the founder of Russian petroleum geology, who developed textbooks. Theoretical studies conducted under his leadership were the basis of the doctrine of the origin of oil and the conditions of formation of their deposits, led to the discovery of the largest oil regions in the USSR: the Ural-Volga region, Komi, Western Siberia, the North Caucasus, as well as in Central Asia and Azerbaijan.
The exhibit comes from the collection of Vladimir Shukhov. Shukhov is the creator of the first main oil pipelines, oil storage facilities and thermal oil cracking plants. He is at the origin of most of the technical solutions that oilmen around the world use today for the extraction, transportation, storage and refining of oil.
After graduating from the St. Petersburg Mining Institute in 1910, at the age of 39, Gubkin became a member of the Geological Committee and, until 1917, studied the geological structure and oil content of the territories of the North Caucasus and the Absheron Peninsula. These studies have made a major contribution to the deepening of knowledge of the geological structure, including stratigraphy and tectonics, of these areas and were marked by major discoveries that brought the scientist worldwide fame.
Gubkin's geological routes passed through Sumgait, Uchtapinsky, Kounsky, Perekishkyulsky, Adjikabulsky districts and Kabristan pastures. They discovered an arm-shaped type of deposits, etc. According to the research results of this period, Gubkin received the rank of court counselor.
