Louise Smith is the second woman to compete in top-level NASCAR racing. Despite this, she earned the nickname "the first lady in racing." Louise Smith raced from 1949 to 1956. During her career, she scored 38 victories in various racing classes, 28 of which were in the Whelen Modified Tour series.
Her career began in 1949 after visiting the Daytona Beach Road Course as a spectator. Unable to stay away, Smith decided to take part in the race in the new Ford family car. However, at one of the turns, an inexperienced racer lost control and the car overturned. Photos from the scene of the incident quickly spread in her hometown of Greenville, South Carolina, and news of the incident preceded her return home.
Notably, Smith's debut race was also the first in NASCAR history to feature three women simultaneously: Louise herself, Ethel Mobley, and Sarah Christian.
