The idea of publishing a large work, which includes a detailed, comprehensive artistic and scientific description of the Russian Empire and the peoples inhabiting it, appeared to M. O. Wolf a long time ago. But, due to the huge risk of significant costs and the difficulty of finding suitable writers, scientists, and artists for the implementation of the idea itself, he hesitated for a long time to start implementing his plan.
Pictorial Russia was ahead of its time in terms of content and scope of publication. The Russian society was not ready to accept such a publication in full for obvious reasons: there were not so many people who could buy it at that time, and therefore it was not a commercial success. The project was huge, but the result was not what the publishers expected.
The first part of the sixth volume of the Pictorial Russia edition is presented in the Stargift collection. The book is devoted to the description of Moscow and the Moscow industrial region.
