Antoine Le Pois is a naturalist and scholar of Renaissance numismatics. "Reflections on ancient medals and engravings, mostly Roman" is the first and legendary edition by Antoine Le Pois, published after the author's death with his portrait and dedication of the author's brother Nicholas to the Duke of Lorraine, whose personal physician was Antoine. The memorial nature of the publication and the high status of the scientist and his family provided virtually unlimited opportunities for the preparation and printing of the book.
48 engravings made on wooden boards were made especially for the publication. In addition to the portrait of Antoine, individual engravings with images of Mercury, Priapus, Pomon and hermaphrodite, the publication included 23 explanatory engravings in the text, and after the text 20 separate sheets with 160 Roman medals, Gnostic emblems, symbols and monograms were given. This work is one of the key ones in the numismatic science of the Renaissance.
Copies with engravings from this period are rarely preserved in complete condition. The Stargift collection presents a fully complete copy in an owner's one-piece leather binding of the XVIII century. The edition from this edition was sold at Christie's auction in 2005 for 16,800 euros.
