Vegetarianism came to Russia in the mid-1860s, when the society of vegetarians first appeared in St. Petersburg. They jokingly called him "Neither fish nor meat." At the beginning of the century, it was headed by Alexander Petrovich Zelenkov, MD, surgeon.

His wife, Olga Konstantinovna Zelenkova (nee. Sluchevskaya; 1845-1921), in 1913 published the first vegetarian cookbook with the title "I don't eat anyone." At that time, this family was quite famous in Russia for its views and the promotion of a vegetarian lifestyle.
Here's how Olga Zelenkova promoted vegetarianism: "And it's strange why a modern intellectual actually rebels and is indignant at murderers when he himself continuously, without even thinking about it, feeds on the corpses of animals, more or less modified by culinary art and, so to speak, arranges a cemetery in his stomach?".

Moscow became a center of vegetarianism in 1909, when the Moscow Vegetarian Society was founded. The ideas of avoiding meat have become very popular among educated youth, students, and intellectuals.
Dr. Alexander Petrovich Zelenkov, before becoming a homeopath, went through a solid field of general medicine. After graduating from the University of Dorpat in 1873, he joined the clinic of the famous surgeon Bergman as an assistant, where he wrote and then defended his thesis "On acute diffuse purulent osteomyelitis" for the degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1877-78, he was first a resident and then the chief physician of the Evangelical Military Infirmary in Sistovo on the Danube. After the war, he served in St. Petersburg in the surgical departments of various city hospitals, was a member of Russian Russian Society of Physicians and secretary of the Russian Surgical Society N. I. Pirogov, from 1888-1900, consultant in surgery at the Imperial Clinical Institute of Princess Elena Pavlovna, having graduated from the service with the rank of Full State Councilor.

Dr. Zelenkov is a special advocate of all so-called "natural" (i.e. dietary and hygienic) methods of treatment. In 1909, he opened a "health resort for chronic patients" near Riga, in a picturesque wooded area on the shore of a large Kish lake, where this "natural" method is used for treatment in the form of water and air-light bathing, massage, gymnastics, etc.
