Команда успешно играла в чемпионатах СССР, а в 1970-м году в результате победы на чемпионате мира в Стокгольме была признана сильнейшей в мире. Главным же достижением сборной является победа на Олимпийских играх-1972 в Саппоро. Команда в тот момент испытывала ряд трудностей, так как переживала «смену поколений». Близилась к концу карьера таких её столпов, как Виталий Давыдов и Александр Рагулин, Игорь Ромишевский и Виктор Кузькин, Анатолий Фирсов и Евгений Мишаков. Тем не менее, «ветераны» не подвели в противостояниях, а молодые игроки с их поддержкой не дрогнули в сложные моменты матча. Советская ледовая команда безоговорочно выиграла своё третье подряд олимпийское золото, по очереди разгромив команды Финляндии (9:3), США (7:2), Польши (9:3) и Чехословакии (5:2). И лишь однажды подопечные Анатолия Тарасова сыграли вничью. Это случилось во втором поединке, в котором хоккеисты СССР противостояли команде Швеции (3:3). Блистательная сборная Советского Союза в 1972 году в очередной раз подтвердила, что является флагманом всего хоккейного искусства. Остановить «красную машину» было невозможно.
