Mario Vargas Llosa is a Peruvian novelist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (2010), the Cervantes Prize (1994) and the Jerusalem Prize (1995), one of the most important Latin American writers of our time.

The writer is also popular in Russia: in 2017, he was awarded the Yasnaya Polyana Prize, co-founded by the L. N. Tolstoy Estate Museum.

In total, he wrote more than 30 works. All of them are somehow connected with social or political issues, the main themes of his work are dictatorship, violence and the fight against them. Many of the author's books tell about the protest of an individual against injustice, social violence or a corrupt state apparatus. 
According to the writer, "in fiction there is always a protest against the limitations and poverty of life as such. And anyone with even a little imagination and passion cannot be satisfied with such a world."
