The St. George cufflinks are dedicated to the patron saint of the army, the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious.
They are based on the image of St. George, sitting on a white horse and striking a serpent with a spear, which symbolized for Christians the victory over the devil– the "ancient serpent."
St. George is revered as the patron saint of Moscow – the image of a horseman trampling a snake with a spear was included in the ancient coat of arms of the city.
St. George the Victorious is also the patron saint of the Russian army.
The lacquer miniatures that decorated the cufflinks were made in the ancient Russian papier-mache painting technique by Fedoskinsky craftsmen, known all over the world for their luxurious black-lacquer products of this folk craft.
