The founder of the Calvert chess style was the English chess master John Calvert. His firm was located in London at 189 Fleet Street from 1790 to 1840. For a long time they were the most popular chess design in England. The figures combine very fine turning with openwork carving. We have preserved the authenticity of the proportions and all sizes of these pieces in relation to antique antique chess. If Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson had met at a chessboard, as happened in the English version of the film, then they could well have played exactly such chess.
