"They Fought for the Motherland" is a novel by Mikhail Sholokhov about the Great Patriotic War. The work on the novel was carried out in three stages: in 1942-1944, 1949 and 1969. Shortly before his death, the writer burned the manuscript of the novel. Only individual chapters of the work have been published. The surviving chapters of the novel "They Fought for their Homeland" cover the period of pre-war life and raise the difficult issue of repression in the 1930s, describe military everyday life, and the difficult defense of the Don river crossing.
The "Fate of Man" reflected a fate common to many Russian soldiers: battles, German captivity, the loss of all loved ones, the loss of the meaning of life... But meaning can be found when orphanhood brings together two people who have found each other.
Sholokhov's works are illustrated by Yuri Rebrov. The artist paints vivid, realistic portraits of Russian people: they work at the front and in the rear, find the strength to joke and not lose heart, bringing the moment of Victory closer every day.
