Nekhludoff, a rich and handsome Russian prince, seduces Katyusha, a beautiful peasant girl, and leaves her in the service of his aunts. The next time they meet is years later in the courtroom: Katyusha has lost her way and must stand trial for manslaughter.
The prince, who considers himself responsible for Katyusha's condition, will change from head to toe under the irresistible pressure of his conscience and begin to look at the world in which he lives with different eyes. This masterpiece, which paints a realistic portrait of the human spirit, conscience, faith and tsarist Russia of the 19th century, led to Tolstoy being declared an atheist and excommunicated from the church in 1901.
