The new volume of the series "Great Rulers" tells about the first crowned Russian tsar John IV Vasilyevich, nicknamed the Terrible (1530-1584), a controversial and even frightening man. One of the most educated people of his time, a polymath, a spiritual writer, a skilled politician and an outstanding strategist - and at the same time: a bloody tyrant who plunged the country into a deadly vortex of total terror; a half-witted monster who killed his own son with his own hands and enjoyed the contemplation of sophisticated torture.
During the reign of Ivan the Terrible, Russia gained international weight: the first Zemsky Sobor was held in Moscow; Stoglav was created; the kingdoms of Kazan and Astrakhan were conquered, Siberia was annexed; trade with Britain, Persia, Central Asia was started; the first printing house was opened; Arkhangelsk, Kungur and Ufa were built; the Don Cossacks were formed; the famous Temple of the Intercession was erected in memory of the conquest of the Kazan Kingdom, a symbol of Moscow, no less famous in the world than the Moscow Kremlin. And with all this, thousands of innocent people were killed, tortured and starved, the cities and churches of their own country were ruthlessly devastated, Orthodox shrines were desecrated.
