Ivan Pososhkov is a Russian writer, thinker and the first economist in the history of Russia. His works, filled with original ideas and deep reflections on socio-economic processes, were widely recognized after his death. Pososhkov was a proponent of reform and sought to create a fairer and stronger Russian economy. His views combined progressive ideas with the realities of the time, including attempts to harmoniously combine serfdom with the centralized power of the monarch.
The treatise "The Book of Poverty and Wealth", written at the beginning of the XVIII century, became the first Russian economic work covering a wide range of issues of economic and social life. In this work, Pososhkov raises the issues discussed in Peter I's entourage and offers a Russian interpretation of mercantilist theory. He advocates the restriction of serfdom, arguing that the peasants belong to the sovereign, and not to the landlords, which should contribute to a more humane attitude towards them. In addition, Pososhkov proposes measures to regulate prices, including punishing them for overstating, in order to reduce the exploitation of ordinary people and stabilize the market.
The 1937 edition was published by the State Socio-Economic Publishing House and is a reprint of an important work that still retains historical and scientific value. The book is addressed to a wide range of readers, from historians and economists to those who are interested in public thought and the reforms of the era of Peter the Great.
