For a long time, the sixth continent was safely sheltered from humanity by the violent stormy latitudes of the Southern Ocean. James Cook himself, after circumnavigating the world, indisputably rejected the possibility of the existence of a continent beyond the ice edge. Half a century later, this opinion was disputed by the sailors of the first Russian Antarctic expedition, undertaken on the sailing sloops Vostok and Mirny in 1819-1821. The discovery of Antarctica inscribed the names of F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev in the chronicle of the greatest discoverers and travelers of all time.
In his notes, Admiral Thaddeus Bellingshausen vividly described the vicissitudes of a naval campaign, rightfully considered the most difficult and important ever accomplished. A striking addition to the fascinating narrative were the sketches of another member of the expedition, the artist Pavel Mikhailov.
