"Harmony takes place in everything, and most obviously it is found in sounds, in the structure of the universe and in human souls," wrote the thinker al-Kindi. The desire to convey the harmony of the world was a characteristic feature of the work of architects, artists, and calligraphers of the medieval East. The aesthetics of harmony and rhythm have reached their fullest realization in the art of Arabesque. Recall that an arabesque is a system of ornament consisting of rhythmically repeating geometric and floral patterns in an endless interweaving and intersection, sometimes including zoomorphic motifs and inscriptions. Arabesques decorated flat and curved surfaces, were used in architecture and in all kinds of applied art. Their exquisite lace mesmerized and set up for a long quiet admiration, instilled confidence in the infinity and perfection of the Universe, blooming like a spring garden. The appearance of the new volume of the series "Monuments of World Art" is a significant scientific and cultural event. "The Art of the Countries of Islam" is the first monographic publication in Russian, fully and competently describing the art of the Near and Middle East in the Middle Ages. Its author, the famous orientalist and art historian academician Boris Vladimirovich Weimarn, did not have time to finish work on this book. After the death of the scientist (1990), his student T.H.Starodub completed the work. In her opinion, the uniqueness of this publication lies in the fact that against the background of the typological unity of Islamic art, the author managed to show the stylistic and plastic diversity of many art schools that arose, flourished and faded over the millennia from the birth of Islam to the end of the Middle Ages. Hundreds of color and black-and-white illustrations (mosques, carpets, robes, decorative panels, book miniature...) They convince us that the art of the Islamic East is a whole world, complex, huge and unique.
