The book by the Russian writer, journalist, publisher of the newspaper “St. Petersburg Vedomosti” Vasily Avseenko (1842-1913) was released in 1903 for the anniversary of St. Petersburg. The Illustrated History of St. Petersburg takes us through two centuries in the life of the city on the Neva River, from the laying of the foundation stone to the beginning of the 20th century. But Vasily Avseenko's work is not only a historical excursion: it perfectly describes the life and customs of the townspeople, holidays, architectural monuments and sights of Northern Palmyra. In addition, there was a place for bright workshops of portraits of outstanding people whose activities were associated with the city on the Neva River – from emperors and great generals to artists, writers and poets.
The Illustrated History of St. Petersburg has long been a bibliographic rarity.
