Gaius Julius Caesar's "Notes on the Gallic War" is perhaps the greatest book about the war ever written. It was created in the hot wake of the events by the main character of that war. In it, Caesar the writer is equal to Caesar the commander and the historical figure. This is a tragic epic of the conquest of a huge country and a head-on clash of civilizations. The book is written extremely simply and intelligently, as if it is about the struggle of the Romans with a terrible epidemic. Therefore, Caesar's "Commentaries belli Gallici" can be read as an account of the legendary events of two thousand years ago, but it can also be read as a kind of commentary on the later vicissitudes of world history.
