IMPERIAL ORDER OF SAINT ANNE
The motto of the order is "To those who love truth, piety and fidelity"
In 1725, Peter the Great married his eldest daughter Anna to the Holstein-Gottorp Duke Karl Friedrich. In 1728, Anna Petrovna died in the German duchy shortly after giving birth. On February 14, 1735, in memory of his beloved wife, the Duke established the Order of St. Anne (named after the righteous Anna, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary). In 1797, the order was introduced by Emperor Paul I into the award system of the Russian Empire to distinguish a wide range of government officials and the military. At the same time, the order, which was included in the state awards of the Russian Empire, never ceased to have the special status of a dynastic award of the House of Romanov.
The final statute of the order was approved in 1829. He had 4 degrees, the lowest 4th degree was intended to be awarded only for military merit. In the statute of the Order of St. In 1829, it was stipulated that the badge of the 4th degree can be worn on any type of officer's edged weapon. According to this statute, the officer could place the inscription "For bravery" on the hilt of the Anninsky weapon. During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, a decree was issued on March 19, 1855, according to which, for a visible difference to the 4th degree, a strap (ribbon decoration) was relied on for weapons according to the color of the Anninsky ribbon. By seniority, the order stood one step below the Order of St. Vladimir.
